Tell us about your childhood and where you grew up

I grew up in Washington, Louisiana. A very small town with my mom, dad, and grandmother. My parents moved to Houston for a better life for themselves and I stayed in LA with my grandmother. My parents would visit on holidays and birthdays. They couldn’t afford to take me with them when they initially went but in the fourth grade, I was able to move with my parents full time and go to school. I graduated high school and went on to college at Texas Southern University where I studied telecommunications. I always wanted to be in communications, I thought I would become a news anchorwoman, but I guess God had a different path for me although I spent the last 25 years speaking, coaching, and training around the world. I guess he did keep his promise that I would use my voice to help change lives by inspiring others to live out their dreams.

How did you get started as an entrepreneur?

I wouldn’t have had the mindset and understanding of business, residual income, and compound interest if it had not been for my late husband, Erwin Portis. I watched him make incredible choices. He was a person who really taught me personal growth. I didn’t understand spending one thousand dollars for a one-day workshop and then another thirty-five hundred dollars. We spent as much as ten thousand dollars for a two-day workshop, but it was the best ten thousand dollars that I’ve ever spent! It was called “Star Makers”. It taught me how to talk and engage with people and their personalities, and all the techniques and understanding it takes. I spent ten thousand dollars on that one training but it has earned me hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What is one business lesson you would tell a startup founder?

I think that successful people have a daily routine. In order to get myself in a place to really accomplish big goals, I had to set a daily routine. That was the first thing. I made sure that (& still do) listen to some personal growth for at least thirty minutes per day. Maybe one day while I’m in the shower, the next day in the car, or while cooking dinner. Different places where I owned my time. Also making sure that I was in the right environment. That was keen for me and a lot of my friends and people that I was around initially didn’t really understand. It was a separation so to speak but not in a negative way. I had to put myself in different, uncomfortable environments and around people that were much more successful than me. I would go to places that were a stretch. I wanted to experience the finer things in life and that’s why I’ve always dreamed build.
